Architecture

From USM Wiki

Preferred Term Architecture
Definition The fundamental organization of a system in its components, their relationships with each other and the environment, and the principles that guide its design and development.
Acronym
Explanation An architecture leads to clear agreements about the basic principles of the policies, and about the structures thereof, so that decisions can subsequently be made more easily and consistently.

Architecture is based on three essential components:

  • a structured and consistent glossary of terms
  • a series of components that act as building blocks
  • a set of rules to apply these components in a consistent way.

An architecture is not the same as a design. Architecture and architects should steer the consistent use of architecture components in the design and realization of solutions. See architecture pattern.
